Palmižana is a inhabited place on Sveti Klement, the largest one of Pakleni Islands, situated just south of Hvar town. The story of the place started at the beginning of the 20th c. when Hvar's Eugen Meneghello bought land here and began creating the botanical garden - and also, started to host tourists and visitors of the place. With an allusion to the palm trees around the villa, Eugen named his creation Villa Palmižana. Palmižana stayed the property of the Meneghello family even during the trying years following WW2, the building of the garden went on. During the last third of the 20th c. Palmižana gained a new feature as contemporary Croatian and foreign artists were invited to work in this heavenly atelier. In our times the third generation of the Meneghello family hosts guests in Palmižana and besides them a couple of restaurants and bars have opened in Vinogradišće Bay and a marina was established in Luka Palmižana Bay, too.

A dozen or so bungalows in the Meneghello garden accommodate those who choose Palmižana as their vacation destination - and can afford to stay at that elite resort. A vacation here is not cheap. Except for the guests of the Meneghello place and for those anchoring their own boats in the marina or in Vinogradišće Bay, most of the visitors of Palmižana come here on day trips from Hvar town. Taxi boats and speedboats secure the transfer between the mainland and the island - bulk of these go off for the island in the morning, however, with some luck or by arrangement it's also possible to get to Sveti Klement in the midday hours or in the afernoon.

The most popular beach is the one in Vinogradišće Bay with its rocky and partly gravel and pebbly coast. The coastal area, though, is narrow and isn't suitable for the high number of bathers that might show up during the main season. Would it be too crowded, the bays west of Vinogradišće Bay might be a better choice. Both the western part of Stari Stani Bay and Taršće Bay have pebbly section with an easy access to the sea.

Eating or drinking in the restaurants and bars of Vinogradišće Bay might be expensive for those on the budget. As an alternative, the tiny grocery store at the marina might have something up to grab.
